Generally, motorcycles are divided into three categories based on the way they are used:
Street
Dual-Purpose
Off-Road
The Street and Off-Road categories can be broken down further as shown below.

Large, with fairing and luggage. Designed for carrying two people and luggage, or to go long distances. |

| Sport Low handlebars, rear set pegs. Designed and styled for performance. The "sports cars" of motorcycles. |

| Off-Road | |
| Motocross Designed for competition and recreational off-road use only. They are not street legal. |

Enduro Competition and recreational off-road bikes with lights for night riding. They are still not street legal. |
| Dual-Purpose | |
| Street legal bikes that have lights, signals, and off-road equipment. Certain tires have been approved for on and off road use by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) but these types of tires offer less traction on pavement. | ![]() |
